The recent exhibition, "Beuys and Beyond – Teaching as Art", drew record breaking attendance in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Nearly 75,800 visitors viewed selected works from the Deutsche Bank Collection at the Centro Cultural Recoleta from June 10 to July 18.

“The exhibition touches on two subjects that are important to Deutsche Bank around the globe: art and education,” said Friedhelm Hütte, Global Head of Art of the Deutsche Bank.

The show, reviewed in various major local press including Clarín, La Nación and Perfil, brought accolades and an unprecedented number of visitors to appreciate artworks by the influential German artist, Joseph Beuys, and six of his prominent students: Lothar Baumgarten, Jorg Immendorff, Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, Katharina Sieverding and Norbert Tadeusz, on view with works by leading contemporary Argentinean artists. The show juxtaposes works by the German artists with works by Pablo Siquier and six artists whom he influenced as a teacher, including Diego Bianchi, Tomás Espina, Leopoldo Estol, Luciana Lamonthe, Elisa Strada and Carlos Huffmann. Inspired by a famous quote from Beuys, “To be a teacher is my greatest work of art,” the show seeks to explore the intersections between art as cultural exchange, art as social progress and teaching as an extension of art practice.

Perfil noted "A good implementation of the idea that in art everything can be related and a solution to the most frequent problems of a travelling exhibition, (a lack of a relationship to place and context…) are two of the virtues of ‘Beuys and Beyond - Teaching as Art.’”

Marcelo Blanco, Chief Country Officer of the Deutsche Bank, Argentina, commented: “The exhibition honors the work of important contemporary Argentinean artists in dialogue with renowned German artists from the Deutsche Bank Collection. We are elated with the warm reception from the public.”

Noted Liz Christensen, Deutsche Bank New York-based Art Curator, “The exhibition highlights how Beuys' effect on younger generations has developed across international borders and generations.” “There is a great tradition of the Latin American avant-garde looking to Europe, especially Paris, but so far, it seems few institutions in the region have fully explored the powerful influence upon Latin American artists of Beuys' teachings since the post-modern, post-dictatorship era.”

The exhibition is touring seven renowned Latin American museums over the next two years. It premiered at Museo de Arte Visual in Santiago, Chile, followed by the Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
