Do you have to speak German to work at Deutsche Bank?

We’re proud of our heritage, but we don’t go as far as insisting that everyone speaks German! Everyone who works at Deutsche Bank speaks English fluently. Many people also speak the local language where their office is based. Whilst it’s not always essential to do this, it is necessary in cultures where doing business in the local language is considered very important.

I graduated two years ago. Can I still apply for one of the dbGraduate+ programs?

Unfortunately not. To apply, you’ll need to have graduated from your most recent degree course within the last 12 months.

What are the basic skills and qualifications you look for?

You should not only be passionate about the world of finance, but also show a keen interest in your chosen field.  You already have a record of outstanding academic achievement and you’re eager to go on learning at the same intensive rate. So you’ll thrive on working in a highly collaborative environment with some of the best minds in banking. You’ll also be as motivated and ambitious as we are. Finally, because communication is key to everything we do –all our people need to be fluent in English (and, for some roles, at least one other language).  Speaking German is not essential outside of Germany.

The Recruitment Process

When should I apply for a program?

Dates vary by region, but most applications open in September. You can check application dates for all programs in your region on the recruitment timelines section.

What do we mean by 'Professionals'?

Deutsche Bank considers a "professional" to be anyone interested in a career with the Bank, except those joining one of our dbGraduate+ programs.   A ‘professional’ can be someone who already has a long standing career, or someone who’s newly entering the workforce.

What do we mean by ‘dbGraduate+’?

The people who join our ‘dbGraduate+’ programs and initiatives fall into three categories. They’re either finishing school, or they’re studying for (or have recently completed) their undergraduate or post-graduate degrees.

What’s the recruitment process?

Deutsche Bank recruits on-campus for graduate opportunities across the globe. However, we also accept applications from universities where we don’t have a presence on-campus, too. To be considered for a role with us, everyone has to submit an online application, so the process is the same for everyone.

The recruitment process usually consists of two rounds of interviews before final decisions are made. In some regions, you’ll also be asked to take part in assessment tests. We’ll let you know what the process will look like for you well before your interview.

Our interviews are based around the core competencies you’ll need to work with us in your chosen role. We’ll explore how you’ve shown these competencies in your university career and in extra-curricular activities.

Do you only hire candidates with finance degrees, finance backgrounds or business majors?

No. We recruit highly intelligent graduates who are ambitious and adaptable. They have degrees in many different disciplines. Even though good levels of numeracy are important for some roles, you won’t need a formal mathematical or financial background. We have very comprehensive training programs that will give you all the technical knowledge you’ll need to build a career with us.

What are the program start/end dates?

The dates and lengths of our dbGraduate+ opportunities and programs differ slightly across countries.  Visit our recruitment timelines section to see the key dates for your country.

What is an off-cycle internship?

These are prolonged internship programs, generally lasting six months. They’re designed to fit in with the academic calendars at certain European universities that offer work experience as part of their courses. All off-cycle interns are assessed for the Global Analyst Training Program in line with our traditional intern class.

In 2014, all of these internships will take place in Corporate Banking and Securities, within our Corporate Finance and Markets Division. They’ll last between three and eleven months. As well as on-the-job training and the chance to be involved in live projects, you’ll also receive structured feedback and intensive mentoring. To apply, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of study within a university in Continental Europe.

Do you offer opportunities for graduates outside of the Global Graduate Programs?

Yes. We also offer entry-level opportunities for graduates in select locations and business divisions. Visit the ‘db Access’ section of the site within ‘db Graduate+’ to search or apply for one of these positions.

Does Deutsche Bank hire PhD candidates? I am graduating from my Master program and have full-time working experience prior, am I still eligible?

Most of our opportunities require an undergraduate degree or an MBA. However, there are roles that require a specific skill set or background built up during your PhD or master’s degree. If you’re a master’s graduate, you’ll join the Analyst Training Program. If you’ve gained your PhD, you’ll enter at either Analyst or Associate level, depending on the relevance of your studies to banking and your previous work experience.

How do I decide whether a career in investment banking is right for me – and which area of Deutsche Bank to join?

Do as much research as possible about the industry and about Deutsche Bank, online and off.

If I'm studying abroad or on an exchange program will you still consider me for your summer internship interview process?

Yes. It’s all about being proactive. Do your research thoroughly, and apply in plenty of time online. Although you may not have a chance to meet directly with us on campus, everyone has to submit their application online, so the recruitment process is the same for everyone.

Will Deutsche Bank help me obtain a work visa? Do you sponsor work and travel visa's?

Deutsche Bank work in partnership with our Immigration providers to sponsor candidates who are eligible for work visas in most countries. As immigration rules vary from country to country, you are responsible for ensuring that you understand the eligibility to work criteria for the country in which you will commence work and complete all the necessary documentation within the appropriate time-frame given to you. Receipt of any relevant work visa is subject to approval by the appropriate authorities. Once you have been successful through Deutsche Bank's recruitment process and hired to start with us, our Immigration providers will reach out to you immediately to commence discussions regarding your immigration status including eligibility to work and appropriate work visa needed. All offers will be contingent on you obtaining proper work authorization.

What programs and regions are available? What program and role am I most suitable for?

There are four main types of program. Firstly, there’s db Discover. This covers everything from Internships to educational experiences. It will help you discover more and take the first steps towards a long term career with us. Our Global Analyst Training and Analyst Internship Programs are designed for highly engaged and academically gifted students to give you the perfect foundation for a long-term career with us. Our Global Associate Program and Associate Internship Program are for talented MBAs with strong work experience. Finally, our db Access programs offer graduates the chance to get started in a chosen career from day one, whilst still benefiting from training tailored specifically to the role.

If Deutsche Bank doesn’t visit my campus will my application still be considered?

Yes. Although we maintain relationships with certain universities where we actively market ourselves, all applications are considered very carefully and reviewed closely via our online application tool.

When should I apply and what are the application deadlines? If I get a job at Deutsche Bank, when do I start?

When I apply, what other documents do you need aside from my CV/Resume?

This varies depending on which region and program you apply for. You will be guided for the appropriate documents through the application system. Please ensure that you upload all documents in one file along with your CV/Resume and cover letter.

Should I include a cover letter?

Having plenty of detail to support your application is useful to us. A covering letter is a good place to tell us what especially interests you about working for Deutsche Bank, within the division you’re applying to.

Are there academic grade requirements for eligibility?

We’re looking for people of outstanding academic achievement, but we take a range of factors into consideration, not only a GPA or equivalent.  In some countries, a minimum academic level is a requirement. More importantly than pure academic grades, we’re looking for people with the brightest minds, a genuine passion for working in investment banking, and a real interest in Deutsche Bank as a place to develop their career.

Can I apply to join a program in a country where I don’t currently reside?

We aim to hire and develop people from local talent pools wherever possible. However, there are some exceptions. In some countries, we do accept international applications. For the latest details, check our site regularly, or ask your local Careers Office.

Can I apply to more than one country? Can I apply to more than one division in a region?

We’d like you to research carefully exactly what division you want to work in, and then apply to just one business in one country. If you’re open to other opportunities, our recruiting team may consider forwarding your application to a different area of Deutsche Bank, depending on how you progress through our selection process, as well as business needs.

Can I apply to multiple regions?

Again, we ask that you’re focused in your career search, but our recruiters can discuss other regional opportunities with you should they be appropriate.  We track candidates globally, so recruiters in Asia, Germany, the UK and the US have full visibility of your application and it can be shared across regions if necessary.

I wasn’t successful during the interview process. Can I apply for another position?

This depends very much on why you haven’t been successful.  You should bear in mind that the skills and profile required to be successful in one business will be very different to those needed in another. We would like you to be committed to a long-term career in the division you’ve applied for, rather than simply just switching from one program to another.

How can I track the status of my application?

You can monitor the progress of your application by logging in as a 'Returning Candidate' through our online application tool.

When you log in, you have the option to track your application, to view your completed application and to edit personal details. All you need is your username (email address) and password.

Bear in mind that we may be reviewing several thousand CVs/Resumes. In general, we don’t reject candidates until all of the positions are filled and the program is full. This ensures that everyone has the same opportunity, but it may mean you have to wait a little longer for your response if you apply well before the deadline. How do I update my application once submitted?

Unfortunately, you can’t make any changes to your application once you’ve submitted it.

How can I update my CV/Resume if I haven’t submitted my application?

It’s possible for you to upload another resume to replace your old one simply by attaching a new file in its place. However, once you’ve submitted your application you can’t update it. This ensures a transparent and consistent process across all regions and programs. What’s the most effective way for me to follow up after the interview?

Before you leave, ask your interviewer what the next step is and when you can expect a response. It's a good idea to get contact details and ask if you can call or email. If you haven't heard anything within the stated timeframe, make a follow-up call or send us an email.

How should I prepare for the interview?

You've secured the interview, reviewed the website and talked to people who already work at Deutsche Bank. So how do you ensure a successful interview? The same way you'd go about doing the job once you're there: with careful preparation, research and attention to detail.

The first step in any successful job search is research. Not only do you need to know about the position and division you'll be interviewing for, you also need to know about who we are as a company. The people who join our ‘dbGraduate+’ programs and initiatives fall into three categories. They’re either finishing school, or they’re studying for (or have recently completed) their undergraduate or post-graduate degrees.

What’s the recruitment process?

Deutsche Bank recruits on-campus for graduate opportunities across the globe. However, we also accept applications from universities where we don’t have a presence on-campus, too. To be considered for a role with us, everyone has to submit an online application, so the process is the same for everyone.

The recruitment process usually consists of two rounds of interviews before final decisions are made. In some regions, you’ll also be asked to take part in assessment tests. We’ll let you know what the process will look like for you well before your interview.

Our interviews are based around the core competencies you’ll need to work with us in your chosen role. We’ll explore how you’ve shown these competencies in your university career and in extra-curricular activities.

Do you only hire candidates with finance degrees, finance backgrounds or business majors?

No. We recruit highly intelligent graduates who are ambitious and adaptable. They have degrees in many different disciplines. Even though good levels of numeracy are important for some roles, you won’t need a formal mathematical or financial background. We have very comprehensive training programs that will give you all the technical knowledge you’ll need to build a career with us.

What are the program start/end dates?

Do you offer opportunities for graduates outside of the Global Graduate Programs?

Yes. We also offer entry-level opportunities for graduates in select locations and business divisions. Visit the ‘db Access’ section of the site within ‘db Graduate+’ to search or apply for one of these positions.

Does Deutsche Bank hire PhD candidates? I am graduating from my Master program and have full-time working experience prior, am I still eligible?

Most of our opportunities require an undergraduate degree or an MBA. However, there are roles that require a specific skill set or background built up during your PhD or master’s degree. If you’re a master’s graduate, you’ll join the Analyst Training Program. If you’ve gained your PhD, you’ll enter at either Analyst or Associate level, depending on the relevance of your studies to banking and your previous work experience.

How do I decide whether a career in investment banking is right for me – and which area of Deutsche Bank to join?

Do as much research as possible about the industry and about Deutsche Bank, online and off.

The Unofficial Guide to Banking site provides a no-nonsense guide to the jobs available within the industry as well as practical advice on how to kick-start your career in banking.

Your careers services office may be able to put you in contact with students who’ve worked with us, or with other banks. Your alumni network may also provide useful information. If Deutsche Bank visits your campus, attend presentations and events. You’ll be able to talk to our people and find out more about the Bank and the career opportunities on offer.

Each division of Deutsche Bank offers different opportunities for graduates, depending on your qualifications, skills, areas of expertise, and career aspirations. So you’ll need to research these areas thoroughly before deciding which division you want to apply for. Once you’ve gathered as much information as possible from different sources, both about the industry and Deutsche Bank, and you’re clear on which area would best suit you, you're ready to apply online.

What ongoing training curriculum can I expect after the global induction?

All our graduates benefit from a continuous development program in their first year, which begins after their induction. We’re committed to making sure all our people keep learning throughout their time with us, and offer a wide variety of classroom and online learning.

When will Deutsche Bank be visiting my university? Where can I find out about upcoming events?

You can visit the events section of this site to find out when we may be visiting your campus. You can also check with your careers services office and local university clubs.

If I'm studying abroad or on an exchange program will you still consider me for your summer internship interview process?

Yes. It’s all about being proactive. Do your research thoroughly, and apply in plenty of time online. Although you may not have a chance to meet directly with us on campus, everyone has to submit their application online, so the recruitment process is the same for everyone.

Will Deutsche Bank help me obtain a work visa? Do you sponsor work and travel visa's?

Deutsche Bank work in partnership with our Immigration providers to sponsor candidates who are eligible for work visas in most countries. As immigration rules vary from country to country, you are responsible for ensuring that you understand the eligibility to work criteria for the country in which you will commence work and complete all the necessary documentation within the appropriate time-frame given to you. Receipt of any relevant work visa is subject to approval by the appropriate authorities. Once you have been successful through Deutsche Bank's recruitment process and hired to start with us, our Immigration providers will reach out to you immediately to commence discussions regarding your immigration status including eligibility to work and appropriate work visa needed. All offers will be contingent on you obtaining proper work authorization.

What programs and regions are available? What program and role am I most suitable for?

There are four main types of program. Firstly, there’s db Discover. This covers everything from Internships to educational experiences. It will help you discover more and take the first steps towards a long term career with us. Our Global Analyst Training and Analyst Internship Programs are designed for highly engaged and academically gifted students to give you the perfect foundation for a long-term career with us. Our Global Associate Program and Associate Internship Program are for talented MBAs with strong work experience. Finally, our db Access programs offer graduates the chance to get started in a chosen career from day one, whilst still benefiting from training tailored specifically to the role.

If Deutsche Bank doesn’t visit my campus will my application still be considered?

Yes. Although we maintain relationships with certain universities where we actively market ourselves, all applications are considered very carefully and reviewed closely via our online application tool.

Applying

When should I apply and what are the application deadlines? If I get a job at Deutsche Bank, when do I start?

Application and start dates vary by country and program. For the latest details, check the site regularly and keep in touch with your local Career Services office.

When I apply, what other documents do you need aside from my CV/Resume?

This varies depending on which region and program you apply for. You will be guided for the appropriate documents through the application system. Please ensure that you upload all documents in one file along with your CV/Resume and cover letter.

Should I include a cover letter?

Having plenty of detail to support your application is useful to us. A covering letter is a good place to tell us what especially interests you about working for Deutsche Bank, within the division you’re applying to.

Are there academic grade requirements for eligibility?

We’re looking for people of outstanding academic achievement, but we take a range of factors into consideration, not only a GPA or equivalent.  In some countries, a minimum academic level is a requirement. More importantly than pure academic grades, we’re looking for people with the brightest minds, a genuine passion for working in investment banking, and a real interest in Deutsche Bank as a place to develop their career.

Can I apply to join a program in a country where I don’t currently reside?

We aim to hire and develop people from local talent pools wherever possible. However, there are some exceptions. In some countries, we do accept international applications. For the latest details, check our site regularly, or ask your local Careers Office.

Can I apply to more than one country? Can I apply to more than one division in a region?

We’d like you to research carefully exactly what division you want to work in, and then apply to just one business in one country. If you’re open to other opportunities, our recruiting team may consider forwarding your application to a different area of Deutsche Bank, depending on how you progress through our selection process, as well as business needs.

Can I apply to multiple regions?

Again, we ask that you’re focused in your career search, but our recruiters can discuss other regional opportunities with you should they be appropriate.  We track candidates globally, so recruiters in Asia, Germany, the UK and the US have full visibility of your application and it can be shared across regions if necessary.

I wasn’t successful during the interview process. Can I apply for another position?

This depends very much on why you haven’t been successful.  You should bear in mind that the skills and profile required to be successful in one business will be very different to those needed in another. We would like you to be committed to a long-term career in the division you’ve applied for, rather than simply just switching from one program to another.

How can I track the status of my application?

You can monitor the progress of your application by logging in as a 'Returning Candidate' through our online application tool.

When you log in, you have the option to track your application, to view your completed application and to edit personal details. All you need is your username (email address) and password.

Bear in mind that we may be reviewing several thousand CVs/Resumes. In general, we don’t reject candidates until all of the positions are filled and the program is full. This ensures that everyone has the same opportunity, but it may mean you have to wait a little longer for your response if you apply well before the deadline. We hope you understand why, and thank you for your patience.

How do I update my application once submitted?

Unfortunately, you can’t make any changes to your application once you’ve submitted it.

How can I update my CV/Resume if I haven’t submitted my application?

It’s possible for you to upload another resume to replace your old one simply by attaching a new file in its place. However, once you’ve submitted your application you can’t update it. This ensures a transparent and consistent process across all regions and programs. I need help to complete my online test. Who do I contact regarding reasonable adjustments for any disabilities?

Interviews

What’s the most effective way for me to follow up after the interview?

Before you leave, ask your interviewer what the next step is and when you can expect a response. It's a good idea to get contact details and ask if you can call or email. If you haven't heard anything within the stated timeframe, make a follow-up call or send us an email.

How should I prepare for the interview?

You've secured the interview, reviewed the website and talked to people who already work at Deutsche Bank. So how do you ensure a successful interview? The same way you'd go about doing the job once you're there: with careful preparation, research and attention to detail.

The first step in any successful job search is research. Not only do you need to know about the position and division you'll be interviewing for, you also need to know about who we are as a company. You should find out something about our characteristics, some of our history and what differentiates us from the other institutions in our industry. Why? Because, you need to convince your interviewer that you’re the right person for us and for that particular role. It’s as important for you to feel comfortable with us as it is for us to feel comfortable with you.

If you haven't done so already, read and understand our annual report. You won't be expected to know all the details, but you should have a general understanding of how we performed last year. Also review what the press has to say about us and keep up to date by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

What should I expect at the interview?

Be prepared to tell us why you’re right for Deutsche Bank and why Deutsche Bank is right for you. If you’re serious about a career in investment banking, we know that you’ll be talking to a lot of firms. But you should understand how we differ from other financial institutions, and why the division you’re applying to is more suitable for you than another role in the industry.

We’ll expect you to demonstrate an understanding of the role you’re applying to and the work you’ll be doing. We’d also like you to tell us why you want to work in the financial services industry as opposed to any other sector.
